Folk Tales and Folk Poetry
Folktales are traditional stories that were mostly used to pass on moral and cultural values as well as lessons from one generation to another. Before the advent of technology that made mass media and printing available, societies relied on storytellers for education and entertainment. Through the stories woven around strange places, magical events and mythical creatures, the storytellers not only entertain their listeners, but also provide valuable clues to us regarding culture and social life of old civilizations and their people. Georgia is lying on the famous Silk Road forming a bridge between Eastern and Western cultures. Thanks to the strategic location, Georgian literature is rich with folk tales influenced by other neighboring civilizations such as Persia, Turks, Byzantium and Russia.
